滚子链和摩擦传动的选择取决于使用环境。滚子链更耐污，更适合输送散装物料。枢轴链则专为输送高散装物料而设计。理想情况下，两轴中心距应为链节距的30至50倍。链轮尺寸取决于使用环境，这也决定了链条的疲劳强度和耐磨性。
滚子链更能耐受污浊环境。
传动链和滚子链之间存在一些关键区别。最显著的区别在于材料。传动链通常比滚子链更耐用。然而，两种链条都容易在脏污环境中使用。虽然传动链有时用于重型作业，但滚子链通常用于更脏污的环境。事实上，当作业环境非常脏污且链条需要在轨道上滑动时，通常会使用传动链。

双头链条在高负载应用中效率更高。其内部宽度上布满凸耳，可防止链条扭结。这种链条常用于重型起重机械。其他类型的链条包括滚子链、动力传动链和衬套滚子链。这些类型的链条也广泛应用于摩托车、自行车和运输领域。除了效率更高之外，带凸耳的链条也比摩擦传动链磨损更少。
