Construction of the chain<\/strong><\/p>\n

En la cadena de rodillos con bujes, existen dos tipos de eslabones que se alternan. El primer tipo son los eslabones internos, que constan de dos placas internas unidas por dos casquillos o bujes sobre los que giran dos rodillos. Estos eslabones internos se alternan con los eslabones externos del tipo CZPT, que consisten en dos placas externas unidas por pasadores que atraviesan los casquillos de los eslabones internos. Si la cadena no se utiliza en aplicaciones de alto desgaste (por ejemplo, si solo transmite movimiento desde una palanca manual a un eje de control en una m\u00e1quina o una puerta corredera en un horno), entonces se puede utilizar uno de los tipos de cadena m\u00e1s simples. Por el contrario, cuando se requiere mayor resistencia pero la transmisi\u00f3n suave de un paso menor, la cadena puede ser \"siamesed\"; en lugar de solo dos filas de placas en los lados exteriores de la cadena, puede haber tres (\"d\u00faplex\"), cuatro (\"tr\u00edplex\") o m\u00e1s filas de placas que corren en paralelo, con bujes y rodillos entre cada par adyacente, y el mismo n\u00famero de filas de dientes que corren en paralelo en las ruedas dentadas para que coincidan. Use<\/strong><\/p>\n

Las cadenas de rodillos se utilizan en transmisiones de baja a media velocidad, a unos 600 a 800 pies por minuto; sin embargo, a velocidades m\u00e1s altas, de unos 2000 a 3000 pies por minuto, normalmente se utilizan correas trapezoidales debido a problemas de desgaste y ruido.
Una cadena de bicicleta es un tipo de cadena de rodillos. Las cadenas de bicicleta pueden tener un eslab\u00f3n maestro o requerir una herramienta especial para su instalaci\u00f3n y desmontaje. En la mayor\u00eda de las motocicletas se utiliza una cadena similar, pero m\u00e1s grande y, por lo tanto, m\u00e1s resistente, aunque a veces se sustituye por una correa dentada o una transmisi\u00f3n por eje, que ofrecen un menor nivel de ruido y requieren menos mantenimiento.
La gran mayor\u00eda de los motores de autom\u00f3viles utilizan cadenas de rodillos para accionar el \u00e1rbol de levas. Los motores de muy alto rendimiento suelen utilizar transmisi\u00f3n por engranajes, y a partir de principios de la d\u00e9cada de 1960 algunos fabricantes comenzaron a usar correas dentadas.
Las cadenas tambi\u00e9n se utilizan en carretillas elevadoras que emplean cilindros hidr\u00e1ulicos como polea para elevar y descender el carro; sin embargo, estas cadenas no se consideran cadenas de rodillos, sino que se clasifican como cadenas de elevaci\u00f3n o de hojas.
Las cadenas de corte para motosierra se parecen superficialmente a las cadenas de rodillos, pero est\u00e1n m\u00e1s relacionadas con las cadenas de hojas. Se accionan mediante eslabones de transmisi\u00f3n salientes que tambi\u00e9n sirven para fijar la cadena a la barra.<\/p>\n

Un uso quiz\u00e1s inusual de un par de cadenas de motocicleta se encuentra en el Harrier Jump CZPT, donde se utiliza una transmisi\u00f3n por cadena de un motor de aire para hacer girar las toberas m\u00f3viles del motor, lo que permite que apunten hacia abajo para el vuelo estacionario o hacia atr\u00e1s para el vuelo normal hacia adelante, un sistema conocido como vectorizaci\u00f3n de empuje.<\/p>\n

Wear<\/strong><\/p>\n

El efecto del desgaste en una cadena de rodillos es aumentar el paso (separaci\u00f3n entre los eslabones), lo que provoca que la cadena se alargue. Cabe destacar que esto se debe al desgaste en los pasadores y casquillos de pivote, no al estiramiento real del metal (como ocurre con algunos componentes de acero flexibles, como el cable del freno de mano de un veh\u00edculo).<\/p>\n

Con las cadenas modernas, es inusual que una cadena (aparte de la de una bicicleta) se desgaste hasta romperse, ya que una cadena desgastada conduce al r\u00e1pido desgaste de los dientes de los pi\u00f1ones, siendo la falla final la p\u00e9rdida de todos los dientes del pi\u00f1\u00f3n. Los pi\u00f1ones (en particular el m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o de los dos) sufren un movimiento de fricci\u00f3n que crea una caracter\u00edstica forma de gancho en la cara impulsada de los dientes. (Este efecto se agrava con una cadena mal tensada, pero es inevitable sin importar el cuidado que se tenga). Los dientes (y la cadena) desgastados no proporcionan una transmisi\u00f3n suave de CZPT y esto puede hacerse evidente por el ruido, la vibraci\u00f3n o (en motores de autom\u00f3viles que usan una cadena de distribuci\u00f3n) la variaci\u00f3n en el tiempo de encendido que se observa con una l\u00e1mpara estrobosc\u00f3pica. Tanto los pi\u00f1ones como la cadena deben reemplazarse en estos casos, ya que una cadena nueva en pi\u00f1ones desgastados no durar\u00e1 CZPT. Sin embargo, en casos menos graves, puede ser posible conservar el pi\u00f1\u00f3n m\u00e1s grande, ya que el m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o suele ser el que sufre mayor desgaste. Solo en aplicaciones muy ligeras, como una bicicleta, o en casos extremos de tensi\u00f3n inadecuada, la cadena suele salirse de los pi\u00f1ones.<\/p>\n

En la industria, es habitual controlar el movimiento del tensor de la cadena (ya sea manual o autom\u00e1tico) o la longitud exacta de la cadena de transmisi\u00f3n (una regla general es reemplazar una cadena de rodillos que se haya alargado 3% en una transmisi\u00f3n ajustable o 1.5% en una transmisi\u00f3n de centro fijo). Un m\u00e9todo m\u00e1s sencillo, especialmente adecuado para ciclistas o motociclistas, consiste en intentar separar la cadena del pi\u00f1\u00f3n m\u00e1s grande, asegur\u00e1ndose de que est\u00e9 tensa. Cualquier movimiento significativo (por ejemplo, que permita ver a trav\u00e9s de un hueco) probablemente indica que la cadena est\u00e1 desgastada hasta el l\u00edmite o m\u00e1s all\u00e1. Chain strength<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most common measure of roller chain’s strength is tensile strength. Tensile strength represents how much load a\u00a0chain can withstand under a\u00a0one-time load before breaking. Just as important as tensile strength is a\u00a0chain’s fatigue strength. The critical factors in a\u00a0chain’s fatigue strength is the quality of steel used to manufacture the chain, the heat treatment of the chain components, the quality of the pitch hole fabrication of the linkplates, and the type of shot plus the intensity of shot peen coverage on the linkplates. CZPT factors can include the thickness of the linkplates and the design (contour) of the linkplates. The rule of thumb for roller chain operating on a\u00a0continuous drive is for the chain load to not exceed a\u00a0mere 1\/6 or 1\/9 of the chain’s tensile strength, depending on the type of master links used (press-fit vs. slip-fit)[citation needed]. Roller chains operating on a\u00a0continuous drive beyond these thresholds can and typically do fail prematurely via linkplate fatigue failure.<\/p>\n

The standard minimum ultimate strength of the ANSI 29.1 steel chain is 12,500 x\u00a0(pitch, in inches)2. X-ring and O-Ring chains greatly decrease wear by means of internal lubricants, increasing chain life. The internal lubrication is inserted by means of a\u00a0vacuum when riveting the chain together.<\/p>\n

Chain standards<\/strong><\/p>\n

Standards organizations (such as ANSI and ISO) maintain standards for design, dimensions, and interchangeability of transmission chains.
